Erdal Safari  -  Crew neck sweater with ¾ sleeves

Hand knit pattern  

Central Maine Knits

Erdal Safari – Purple

5.5 sts   X  8 rows per inch ( check for proper gauge )

Size SMALL  ( medium and large below )

Yarn needed -  S = 13 oz   M = 15 oz   L =  17 oz

CREW NECK SWEATER

SMALL  18” wide  X  19” long

Back

Cast on with smaller needle 100 stitches

Work in 1 X 1 rib for 1”

With larger needles  work in stockinette stitch for 10”  ( 11” total )

Place markers on each side to mark for sleeves

Decrease 1 stitch at the beginning of the next 10 rows ( 5 per side – 90 sts remain )

Work in stockinette for 6 “ more

Bind off center 32 sts.

Decrease I stitch at neck edge on alternate rows 3 times

Bind off 26 shoulder stitches

Do same for the other side

Piece should measure 19”

Front

Work the same as the back through the armhole decreases and the piece measures 16”

Bind off the 20 center neck stitches

Decrease I stitch on neck edge on alternate rows  9 times ( 26 stitches remain )

Work until piece measures 19”   Bind off

Do the same for the other shoulder.

Seam together 1 front shoulder and 1 back shoulder

Pick up for neck band :  18 sts on front side of neck, 20 center front sts, 18 sts on other side of neck,  6 sts on side of back neck, 32 back neck sts, 6 sts on other back neck side

Total of  100 sts

Work in 1 X 1 rib for  ¾” 

Bind off

Seam shoulder together.

 Seam neck band together

Sleeves

Cast on with smaller needle  60 stitches

Work in 1 X 1 rib for 1”

With larger needle, work in stockinette stitch , increasing 1 st each side evenly throughout sleeve 15 times ( 90 sts total ) until sleeve measures 12”

Decrease 1 stitch per side 5 times on the next 10 rows ( 80 sts remaining )   Bind off sleeve

Match center of sleeve to shoulder seam, pin together and sew

Sew body and sleeve seams

Weave in and trim all ends

MEDIUM   19”  X  20”

Cast on 106 stitches

Mark for sleeves at 12”

Continue as above

LARGE   20”   X  21”

Cast on 112 stitches

Mark for sleeves at 13”

Continue as above

Row 0 – Cast on 100 sts for a 1 X 1 rib Tension 0 ( Brother Standard Bed Machine )

Hang comb and 1 large wt

Do selvedge rows

Row 4 – tension 3

Rib 10 rows   Transfer to main bed

Row counter to 0

Row 0 – tension 10

Row 90 – mark sides for sleeves

Decrease 1 stitch each side on rows  90, 92, 94, 96, 98  ( 90 sts remain )

Row – 142  put center 32 sts on waste yarn

Right side - Decrease 1 stitch neck side on rows 144, 146, 148

Row 150 – put shoulder  (26 sts) on waste yarn

Do same for left side

Front – same as back to row 126

Put center 20 sts on waste yarn

Right side – Decrease 1 stitch neck side on rows  128, 130, 132, 134, 136, 138,140, 142, 144  ( 26 sts remain )

Row 150  -  put shoulder sts on waste yarn

Do same for left side

Bind 1 front shoulder and 1 back shoulder together

Hang sweater on machine picking up :  18 sts on side of front, 20 center front sts, 18 sts on other side of front, 6 sts on side of back, 32 back sts, 6sts on other side of back ( 100 sts total )

Knit 1 row     Transfer to ribber for 1 X 1 rib 

Rib 6 rows Tension 3

Rib 1 row tension 10    Bind off

Bind shoulder together

Sew small collar seam

Sleeves :

Cast on 60 sts for 10 row  1 X 1 rib  Tension 3    Transfer to main bed

Row counter to 0    Tension 10

Increases 1 stitch per side in rows :  6, 12, 18, 24, 30, 36, 42, 48, 54, 60, 66, 72, 78, 84, 90 ( 90 sts total )

Row 100 – Partial knit 1 st per side until you have 5 needles out of work on each side

Row 110 – knit 1 row over all      Put on waste yarn

Hang sweater on machine  between sleeve markers  ( 90 needles )

Hang sleeve on top    Bind off

Sew side seams and sleeve seams.   Weave in and trim all ends

MEDIUM

Cast on 106 sts

Mark sleeves and start decreases Row – 100

Back neck decreases  start row 152    Put on waste yarn row 160 ( 29 shoulder sts )

Front neck decreases start row  136   Put on waste yarn row 160

Finish as above

LARGE

Cast on 112 sts

Mark sleeves and start decreases on row 110

Back neck decreases start row 162   Put on waste yarn on row 170  ( 32 shoulder sts )

Front neck decreases start row 146   Put on waste yarn on row 170

Finish as above
